BACKGROUND: In 2001, Hollywood Screenwriter Barry Morrow approached Lane Wyrick with photos, film and video footage of a man named Bill Sackter. Bill had been institutionalized for 44 years for mild mental retardation, and in 1972, Barry had befriended him and took the extraordinary step of becoming Bill's legal guardian to keep him from going back to the institution.

Their friendship and Bill's impact on the people around him drew great attention, and Bill became well-known in the Iowa City area as proprietor of Wild Bill's Coffee Shop in North Hall on the University of Iowa Campus. Bill started to become a bit famous and was named Handicapped Iowan of the Year and was invited to the White House as one of five finalists for Handicapped American.

All the while, Barry had been documenting his relationship with Bill with photos, video, and film, with the hopes that he could create a documentary. He proposed the idea to the University of Iowa Foundation Board Members, and two of the people there said they'd like to help.

Barry flew to New York and talked with CBS executives who said that they wanted to take the story and create a based-on-real-life drama for television. Mickey Rooney played the part of Bill and Dennis Quaid played the part of Barry in the groundbreaking tv movie "Bill" which aired in 1981 to great success.

Bill became an instant hero for people with disabilities, and Barry started his Hollywood screenwriting career and went on to win an Oscar for his screenplay "Rain Man" which was based on the incredible savant Kim Peek.
